For many students studying away from for the first time can be a daunting and along with managing feelings of home sickness, they will also be expected to manage their finances. According to recent government statistics, 90% of students in the United States have debts of over $30,000 and the majority of that figure is from student loans.

It is easy to lose track of spending while at college because, unfortunately, there are some expenses that students cannot avoid. However, there are a lot of ways they can cut down on their expenditure by being a little more savvy. The best thing to do is to identifty sources of expense and then think of ways to reduce them without compromising too much quality.

Ways to Reduce Student Expenses

1. Food – Food is obviously something that is essential and something that cannot be simply omitted (unlike alcohol and partying). The best way to save money on food is to cook everything fresh from ingredients instead of buying fast food. Not only will this be more healthier but you will also make huge savings on food costs.

2. College textbooks – One expense that everyone at college has to manage is textbooks. College textbooks are extortionately expensive, in fact, some of the can cost over $100. Each semester will have different classes which will require different books – this means you could be spending thousands of dollars on books every year.

Fortunately, there are some ways to get cheap college textbooks. For example, you can buy them used from campus bookshops and online or you could find a site that will let you rent them such as Campus Book Rentals. Renting books is a good option as it allows you get the books at the lowest price (even lower than buying second hand books). Another advantage is that the books are always in good conditions whereas if you bought them used, the condition of them can vary.

3. Clothing and Supplies – Clothing and supplies are another expense which cannot be avoided. Before purchasing anything, it is always a good idea to look for deals online. There are many coupons and printable vouchers that you may be available for the stores in your area and possibly even free samples. Daily deals sites such as Groupon may have something that is suitable for you at a discount price and valid coupons can also be purchased from eBay which can give you huge savings – just make sure it is not past their expiry date.

Keeping of personal finances is very important, especially if you are a student without a part time job and relying on a loan. It is best to plan out your monthly budget and to make sure you do not overspend to avoid huge debt repayments after you have graduated. Hopefully with these tips you will be able to keep track of your spending and enjoy your studies without having to worry about money problems in the future.

Children need backpacks when going to school so that they have storage for their books, notebooks, and other school supplies. The backpacks should have the ability to distribute the weight evenly to the shoulders of the children so that they will feel comfortable when carrying their backpacks. Here are some frequently asked questions regarding kids’ backpacks.

Do School Backpacks have Other Uses?

Yes. Just because it is called a school backpack doesn’t mean you will be using it in school specifically. The children can also use their backpacks when they go on trips or an overnight stay at a friend’s house. The backpacks are versatile and can carry a lot of things.

What Features Should I Consider in a Backpack?

There are many features that you can consider when buying a backpack for your children. But the most important feature that you need to consider in a backpack is that the backpack should have many compartments on it. Some backpacks have laptop compartments and other compartments that come in different sizes. Your children can bring along many items with them when their backpacks have many compartments.

Are Wheeled Backpacks Good for Carrying Heavy Loads?

Yes, they are good for carrying heavy loads. The downside of backpacks with wheels is that your children will have a difficult time from maneuvering through stairs or many uneven surfaces. Your children will also feel awkward when they carry backpacks with wheels in a traditional way.

Should I Personalize My Children’s Bags?

Most parents choose to personalize their children’s bags because the design that they make reflects the personality of their children. Some parents design the bags with initials. Some parents also design the bags depending on the gender of their child. For the boys, they add boyish designs to the bag. For girls backpacks, parents add ribbons and other girly items on the bag. It all depends on the preference of the child who will use it.

These are some frequently asked questions by many parents when buying kids’ backpacks. Parents should also consider the material used to make the bags and they must know if the bags are durable. There are many bags for boys and girls. If you want to buy a backpack for your little princess, you can take a look at Roxy Girls Backpacks. The backpacks come in different girl designs that your little girl will sure love. They are also durable and can carry the things that your little girl will need when going to school or having an overnight bonding in a friend’s house.

There’s nothing more frustrating than having bad acne and making it worse with your own actions. You have to think carefully about an overall skincare routine whenever you’re dealing with something like acne and blackheads. You can’t just find an expensive cream and expect fast results without using a preventative approach. There are some factors you might never even think of that contributes acne formation, so it’s time to come up with an overall plan. Education is your best friend when it comes to general skincare, so here are some of the habits that you should avoid if you want clear skin.

Picking and Popping – everybody has popped a pimple at some point so don’t feel bad if you have done it. But if you continue to pick and pop your skin on a continuing basis, you’re asking for trouble in terms of acne in the future. This is one of the worst behaviors on a long-term basis because you’re damaging your skin and spreading bacteria to other areas of your face. It doesn’t really do anything on a temporary basis, except for raise the possibility of acne scars and future blemishes.

Constant Touching – this is somewhat related to the first point, and many people constantly find themselves touching their face. Even people without acne have a tendency to touch her face on a regular basis throughout the day. You should try to avoid this to limit the spread of bacteria, and if you need to touch her face for any reason, make sure your hands are clean first. This simple action can lead to the spread of bacteria or potential outbreaks if you’re not careful.

Tanning – some people still mistakenly believe that they can go outside and tan their acne away. While darker skin might make it less noticeable, you’ll still have the problem going on underneath. You make matters worse, tanning has negative effects on your skin overall and can lead to problems related to wrinkles and premature aging. It basically creates a worse situation for your skin so you should protect yourself from the Sun and avoiding excessive tanning.

Smoking – smoking can definitely contribute to acne, and if it’s a habit you have you should definitely look to quit. In fact there are many reasons to quit smoking and acne formation is among the least important of them. But in terms of skin care, one of the best things you can never do is to avoid smoking altogether. You simply don’t need hundreds of toxins entering your system and clogging your pores.

Stress – stress can definitely have an impact on your skin depending on your situation. While some people can handle it better than others, other folks are prone to intense outbreaks whenever they get stressed. Ironically, one of the things that can cause the most dresses acne itself and you can end up suffering from a self-perpetuating cycle. Try to limit your stress levels and look for ways to relax while focusing on other things besides your acne treatment.

Too Much Washing – it seems like common sense that washing your face would help with getting rid of acne, but you really have to be careful with how often you do it. Avoid exfoliating products or hot water because you don’t want to be too harsh on your face. Some people accidentally washed way too much while scrubbing off a good portion of their moisture at the same time. Gentle regular washing will always be a vital part of any skincare routine, but excessive washing will undoubtedly make things worse if you’re not careful.

Lack of Healthy Living – every part of your body is connected which is why taking care of yourself on the whole will benefit your skin as well. Don’t just concentrate on expensive creams or lotions when it comes to how to get rid of acne effectively. Remember there are other factors such as moisturizing your skin, drinking plenty of water, and getting ample exercise each and every day. Sleep is also something that gets lost in the mix and I can definitely impact your skin. Make sure that you are well rested and keep yourself healthy through a good diet and proper nutrition as well.

In years past, a home office wasn’t a personalized, segregated space in your house that was designated specifically for working from home. It may have been an old roll top desk in the corner of your basement that you might use for balancing your checkbook or paying your bills. Today, with the popularity of telework and the specialization of office furniture and accessories, a home office has evolved into a fully-functional working space. The benefits of telecommuting are well documented. The cost savings and time savings can be significant but there is at least one responsibility of the home office worker that is not associated with an at-company office worker. That one responsibility is putting together a home office and purchasing the furniture and accessories that goes into it.

If you work in a company office cubicle, on your first day at work you probably walked into an office that was already furnished for you by the company. This might be a convenience but it can also be considered a drawback to some. Everything in the office was probably generic and looked like all of the other offices in the company. You didn’t have the option of putting your personal stamp on your office furniture and accessories. Well, with a home office you have that ability. It might cost you some money but the investment will pay big dividends in the long run.

So where do you start with a home office? The foundation of any office is a chair and a desk. You could find an extra desk in your basement and a basic chair that you have lying around but that’s probably not the smartest choice. Your office is where you will be sitting for hours on end so doesn’t it make a whole lot of sense to search the marketplace for furniture that matches the way that you work? If your computer is your link to your company’s headquarters, it would behoove you to find a desk that is made for the technology that you use on a regular basis.

A computer desk is a specialized piece of furniture built to store your computer system. Some features found on a computer desk are multiple levels for your computer’s components, ample room for the free flow of cords emanating from your computer, and a keyboard tray that is placed at the optimum location for typing. Rather than trying to retrofit an old wooden desk you have around the house to work with your computer system, purchasing a modern computer desk to fit your working habits is the smart alternative.

The next most important piece of furniture for your home office is your office chair. Once again, specialization has also moved into the area of the office chair. Go visit a local office store and you’ll see what I am talking about. The choices you have for various types of office chairs are numerous. For the home office, choosing an ergonomic model may just prevent any future back or shoulder pain that you may experience with an inferior basic chair. It may cost you a bit more but we’re talking about your health. You’ll be sitting in this chair for many hours each working day so buying one that takes your health in mind is the perfect decision. You could even opt for a reclining model with a built-in foot rest or separate ottoman which will allow you to rest your eyes during the workday in order to recharge your battery for the rest of the working day.

Another mandatory office accessory for the home office is a file cabinet. One popular model is referred to as a 4 drawer file cabinet. This type of file cabinet will allow you to keep your office paperwork properly categorized within and between each drawer giving you a lot of versatility and ample room. Owning a file cabinet will help you keep your paperwork within your office, which is a challenge of having a home office. Another challenge is keeping unwanted clutter from the rest of the house from entering the home office. The proper file cabinet, located close to your desk, will ensure that your file folders make their way back to their proper home after being used.

Configuring a home office with accessories and furniture that match the way that you work on a daily basis, takes some attention to detail. Research what is available in the world of office furniture and find what works for you. Once you do, your home office will be a personal and productive space that you could never find at your company’s office building.

Considered to be a part of the Capsicum family, the cayenne pepper, otherwise called chili peppers, is a known spice added in numerous dishes in different cultures for its hot, savory and spicy flavors. Its scientific name is Capsicum annuum and its name “cayenne” has been derived from a town in French Guiana where the said herb has been cultivated. The Cayenne peppers have been introduced to the world in the 15th and 16th centuries and has been extensively used as an alternative for black pepper in Europe. Although this widely known spice is now grown in different continents around the globe, the cayenne pepper benefits remain the same.

Dissecting the cayenne pepper

The known health advantages that can be provided by a serving of cayenne pepper is believed to be brought about by a compound known as capsaicin, medically known as 8,methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide. Capsaicin is the compound responsible for the cayenne pepper’s spiciness. The capsaicin is also known for its alleviating effects on pain as well as its ability to promote cardiovascular health and prevent ulcers. Additionally, the cayenne pepper is teeming with vitamin A through pro-vitamin A carotenoids, which includes the ever popular beta-carotene. This makes the cayenne pepper a good an antioxidant as it prevents free radical damage in the body.

The health benefits

1. Weight loss- One of the most popular uses for cayenne is its ability to make you lose weight. In fact, capsaicin pills are considered to be renowned in the weight loss industry as a weight loss pill. You can even feel yourself lose weight as you eat these cayenne peppers. All the heat takes energy and calories to produce. Thermogenesis or heat production and consumption of oxygen significantly skyrocket even after twenty minutes of eating these peppers.

2. Reduce inflammation- Aside from producing heat and increasing oxygen consumption, capsaicin is also a powerful inhibitor of substance P, which is a neuropeptide that is an important substance in inflammation. Remember that the hotter the pepper is the more capsaicin it contains and the cayenne pepper is considered to be one of the hottest peppers right next to Scotch bonnet and habanero. This in turn, leads to cayenne pepper benefits on various sensory nerve fiber disorders that are marked by inflammation including diabetic neuropathy, arthritis and psoriasis. In one study involving animals, a compound that causes arthritis were injected while simultaneously being fed a diet with capsaicin. It has been shown that capsaicin markedly reduced the onset of arthritis as well as decreased inflammation.

3. Promotes cardiovascular health- Cayenne, as well as other chili peppers, are known to decrease triglyceride levels, blood cholesterol and platelet aggregation. In fact, countries where cayenne and other types of chili peppers are used on a regular basis have lesser cases of pulmonary embolism, stroke and heart attack compared to cultures that don’t have these peppers as a focus on their diet.

4. Boosts Immunity- Since cayenne peppers are also rich in beta-carotene, it also promotes healthy epithelial tissues, which includes the mucous membranes in the lungs, the intestinal tract, the nasal passages and the urinary tract. These mucous membranes are considered to be the body’s first line of the defense against infectious agents.

Include cayenne peppers in your everyday meal for a twist and experience the wonderful cayenne pepper benefits it has to offer.

Since I’ve traveled Europe a fair bit, I’m comfortable in doling out advice on matters of what papers, ID and travel insurance to bring along with you.

We’ll skip the fact that you need to bring a passport with you, that’s a bit “Captain Obvious”.

There is one thing though, that if you have, you simply must bring along. This item of almost magical capabilities is a Student ID. If you have one of these, good on you, because Europe just got a whole lot cheaper.

With a Student ID you can get discounts on almost everything that costs an entry fee, from museums to art galleries to cinemas as well as train tickets. You can save quite a bit, so don’t forget to bring it! I didn’t have one last time I went traveling, and HATED missing out on all the savings.

As for other papers, you will want to bring along your flights and confirmation of tickets and keep them in a safe place along with your passport. Also bring along a small book to write down the hotlines for your bank (in case you lose your card) and your travel insurance (in case you need to make a claim or notify them of something important – more on travel insurance in a moment).

You may also want to leave color photocopies of your passport and other ID back home with your parents or friends. This might come in handy if you ever need a copy (losing your passport is possible, but to state the obvious I would suggest doing it, as it’s extremely annoying – trust me!)

Another trick I use, is to save files in my free GMail account – you will want to secure it with a nice strong password (it needs to have capitals and numbers in it not just words), then you can use it to store some documents that you may need access to at anytime.

Let’s talk about travel insurance. Do I think you need it? Absolutely! I’ve never had to make any serious medical claims, but I have friends who have. It’s just not worth the hassle of NOT having it if something were to happen.

My tips for travel insurance include always reading the fine print, ensuring you are completely covered for emergency medical and transport and to check the excesses for personal items and the like. How much are you actually covered for? How much will you need to pay if you make a claim? Get the policy straight in your own head, so there is no confusion down the track and you know you’re covered for everything you need to be.

Also, have a quick look for promotional code discounts online, many travel insurance companies will have codes to knock off 10% or so – it’s worth a shot!

That’s all for now, don’t forget your passport!

Tom is the editor in chief of Active Backpacker, a site all about traveling and backpacking, it has articles from everything like the best places to visit in Europe and other hot traveling tips.

Is your kitchen looking a little dated these days? Are you really in need of a change to your kitchen décor? Well, wouldn’t it be nice to introduce a contemporary flair to this space and, at the same time, increase your efficiency and productivity while you are preparing and cooking your meals? There is one piece of kitchen furniture that will certainly fit the bill. That piece of furniture is a kitchen island.

If you enjoy your time cooking and preparing meals then there is a high probability that you subscribe to cooking magazines. In these magazines you must’ve seen many different types of islands that work well in any size kitchen. You’ve probably contemplated adding one to your own kitchen. So what are the real benefits of incorporating an island in your kitchen? The additional working surface is the most obvious benefit of an island. Instead of having to work preparing your meals on a cramped kitchen countertop, an island opens up a nice large piece of real estate for your meal preparation. Not only do you have more room to roll out dough and chop your vegetables but you also can face anywhere you want in the kitchen. Don’t underestimate this added advantage of a kitchen island. It will literally change your perspective while you are working in the kitchen.

Added storage is another benefit of an island. You now have the luxury of moving some of your kitchen cookware out of your jam-packed cabinets into the island cabinet. The same thing can be done with your kitchen utensils. You may want to store your forks, knives, and spoons in a more centrally-located drawer in the island. That will leave you room in your existing drawers for another purpose.

If your kitchen table has become antiquated over the years you could opt for a kitchen island with seating. Talk about a big bang for your buck! You are not only removing an outdated table but you are replacing it with a state-of-the-art contemporary island. You could even decide to add an extra sink and a cooktop to the island if you really want to add some more functionality. With the additional seating you could eat at the island on a nightly basis and it would provide guests a place to sit while you are preparing appetizers and the main meal. Never again will you be left out of the conversation while you are preparing for dinner.

A kitchen island will make a tremendous addition to the most popular room of the house. It will revive what was a dull, dreary space with a much-needed focal point. It will also provide you, the passionate chef, with a stylish workstation that will transform your working life in the kitchen.

During the Christmas season the temptation can often be to stop worrying about money. Just as you might think that you deserve that one last drink that tips you over the edge from happy to sick at Christmas time; you might also think you deserve to waste electricity during the season of good will only to discover what a headache the utility bills are at the start of January.

Not only is this post about reducing electricity bills for the sake of fiscal responsibility during these most troubling economic times of record unemployment and national debt, it is also about the equally serious issue of climate change. Most electricity on the power grid is generated by burning fossil fuels. This causes carbon to be released in the atmosphere that gets trapped and in turn causes solar heat to get trapped and warm up the Earth. Already the carbon ratio in the atmosphere is 390 parts per million (ppm). When it reaches 450 ppm the world will experience ecological catastrophe.

So here are a few simple tips for saving electricity this Christmas time in order to save you money and to reduce carbon emissions.

Turn off lights in rooms that are unoccupied. Only turn on the Christmas tree lights at night and switch them off when you go to bed.

If a light bulb goes make a point of replacing it with a much more energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulb. These cost a little more than incandescent light bulbs but save you money in the long run.

Get solar powered tiki torches for outside. These cost about $20 each and once installed will not cost you any more in terms of electricity bills.

Don’t leave computers, TVs, stereos, microwaves and other appliances on standby. It serves no real purpose and is wasting you money. If you find it a bind to turn things off manually every night a smart power strip can do it for you automatically.

Wash your clothes with cold water. Many people do this already. It really makes a difference to your heating bill without effecting how clean the clothes get.

If you have an electric furnace, then don’t leave the heating on all day and all night. Get an Energy Star approved programmable thermostat to give you better control of your heating. And use reasonable settings so that you can wear that delightful sweater that your grandma knitted for you.

If you follow these suggestions and just be generally mindful of your electricity consumption you will be pleasantly surprised when the bills come. It will be like an extra Christmas present to see how much you have saved compared to previous years.

The foyer is the first place that someone will see when they are stepping into a home, therefore, it is important that the person is sending the right message when they have people set foot into their homes. They will find that the decor that they are using in the foyer is going to set the mood for the rest of the house, and one of the most common problems is that the foyer is overcrowded. The foyer has increasingly become an area that people are throwing their belongings into and then leaving them there. When the person steps into the foyer they are going to find that they are going to be overwhelmed with the mess to the point that they may not see the rest of the house that may be in perfect shape. Thus, the person needs to realize that when it comes to the foyer less is more in most cases.

So just what does this mean? It means that for one thing, you should be choosing a theme and sticking to this as best as you can in order to keep it organized and good looking. A few themes that people use is going with an elegant theme, while other people decide to use a country theme or something along these lines to make the foyer fit in with the rest of the home. Whatever, theme you use you need to make sure that you do not go overboard with it. This means that you should look at your space and calculate just what is going to look good and what will be too much. Yes, it may be hard to bypass some pieces because they would be perfect in the foyer, but if this is the case, the person should be certain that they are using pieces that they love and not just those that are okay, but not that appealing for what they want.

If you find yourself buying everything in sight, then you need to slow down and look at the size of your foyer. Most foyers are more like hallways and have a room that is a bit smaller than the bathroom, thus you do not need as many decorations as the entire living room is going to require – just some nice paint and door mats. Overall, you want to make sure that you use decor pieces that count towards getting across the image that you are wanting to make. If you go with everything and anything, then you will find that this is going to make the foyer unbearable.

If you are looking to purchase a property, you may have been recommended or presented with the option of using the assistance of a real estate buyer’s agent. A real estate buyer’s agent can make life a lot easier if you intend on purchasing a property. Besides helping you out for absolutely no cost (in most cases), a buyer’s agent will help you in an array of ways from providing advice to being by your side when you finally choose to purchase a piece of real estate and the transaction is being made. However, while there may be plenty of buyer’s agents around, a good buyer’s agent can be hard to come by. Here are some tips which you should consider when looking for a buyers advocate.

He is exclusively a buyer’s agent.

While this is hard to find, if you do manage to find a real estate buyer’s agent who exclusively offers this service, you’ve probably found a good one. Most buyers’ agents are more versatile and act as middlemen for other services.

He negotiates with the seller rather than you:
A buyer’s agent who tends to negotiate with you and has a vibe that suggests that he is trying to sell something to you rather than focus on what you specifically want is either an inefficient, lazy buyer’s agent who is looking to finish the deal as quickly as possible for his pay day or he’s actually a seller’s agent as well looking to promote a property to further profit from it. Irrespective of the reason, a buyer’s agent who is overly pushy should be approached with skepticism.

He has considerable experience:
Before choosing a real estate buyer’s agent, it is important to query as much as possible and find all information about the buyer’s agent. The individual will be responsible for something which you are heavily invested it, therefore while you don’t directly pay a buyer’s agent for his services, it is justifiable to be finicky.

He is specialized:
There are buyer’s agents who provide the service in general as well as buyer’s agent who specifically focus on certain types of properties or certain locations. Choosing a specialized buyer’s agent appropriate to your requirements is always preferable as he will assuredly have more expertise with properties you are interested in rather than choosing a general buyer’s agent. It should be recognized that however, that specialized buyer’s agents may not be as popular.

These are four important tips to consider when looking for a real estate buyer’s agent.
